Benefits of Minimally Invasive Surgery vs. Traditional Surgery

Less Pain

Minimum invasive surgery (MIS) procedures cause less post-operative pain and discomfort. Studies have shown that patients undergoing minimally invasive and robotic surgery procedures report less pain and require smaller doses of pain relievers than patients undergoing traditional surgeries.

Shorter Hospital Stay

Shorter hospital stay and quicker return to normal activities. Patients who undergo minimally invasive surgical procedures are usually able to go home sooner. And, in many cases, the patient is able to return to normal activities and work more quickly

Less Scarring

Minimally invasive surgery requires a smaller incision, which means smaller, less noticeable scars. The scars that do form as a result of minimally invasive surgery typically have a less jagged edge, which gives them a more appealing look.

Less Injury to Tissue

Most traditional surgeries require a long incision. This incision usually has to be made through muscle. Muscle needs a significant time to heal after surgery. Because there are no long incisions in minimally invasive surgery, surgeons often do not have to cut through muscles to complete the procedure, which leads to less tissue damage and quicker recovery.

Higher Accuracy Rate

Because minimally invasive procedures use video-assisted equipment, the surgeon has better visualization and magnification of internal organs and structure. For patients, this translates into a more accurate and definitive procedure.

Is Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery Right for You?

At Elite Gynecology and Wellness, minimally invasive procedures are used whenever possible. Some procedures and surgeries may not be suitable for every patient. Your surgeon will discuss your personal options before any surgery.

Types of Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery

Our surgeons offer the following types of minimally invasive surgery tailored to fit our patients’ needs:

Robotic Surgery

Dr. Patel is currently the only female surgeon performing gynecologic robotic surgeries at Mary Washington Hospital using the Da Vinci robot. Robotic surgery typically carries less risk of infection, less blood less, less scarring, faster recovery, and less pain when compared to traditional and laparoscopic surgery. Robotic surgeries require smaller incisions than laparoscopic surgery, and hospital stays are cut in half. While hysterectomies are a last resort, Dr. Patel is able to use the Da Vinci robot to perform hysterectomies with and without removal of the ovaries.

Hysteroscopic Surgery

Hysteroscopic surgery involves placing a small camera through the cervix to look at the inside of the uterus. Specialized instruments can be passed through the camera which allows the surgeon to operate inside the uterus without an incision.

Laparoscopic Surgery

Patients having laparoscopic surgery will have a small incision inside or near the belly button, and may have other small (less than 1cm) incisions beneath the belly button. These small incisions allow the passage of a camera and special instruments into the abdomen, allowing the surgeon to carry out the surgery.

Laparoscopy may be used to evaluate and treat a range of conditions:

  • Endometriosis treatment
  • Evaluations for pelvic pain
  • Ovarian Cyst Removal
  • Hysterectomy

Robotic Surgery vs. Minimally Invasive Surgery

Laparoscopic surgery and robotic surgery are two options available for minimally invasive surgical procedures. Both options offer the benefits of faster recovery time and less bleeding and post-operative pain.
